REPRINT 1886-1887 ANSONIA CATALOG - Clockmaker / Watchmaker / Collectibles

FUNCTION

These pliers were manufactured to help service watch mainsprings and their barrels. Most of these old tools are of robust construction using quality metals properly tempered. They perform three main functions:

a) Punch holes on mainsprings

b) Punch a hook on the wall of a mainspring barrel

c) Cut mainsprings to size

Not all models perform all the functions and some of these tools were transformed over the years to perform other functions.

The above model has all three functions in addition to having features found in higher end models such as spring loaded handles, lock, heavier nickelled, etc. The blades are high quality hardened steel pieces, removable and razor sharp. They are specially placed (some have thin metal shims) at an angle such that keeps the edges barely touching to ensure the mainspring does not slip while cutting it. The fulcrum has to be in top shape to minimize lateral movement for this type of operation.

The picture on the right shows a detail of the testing plate. This is an important test to assess how well the tool performs. There are two rows of holes in this piece of tin sheet, one without the chips (the lower row) and another with the chips still attached (upper row). This tool has punches of different shapes: a half disc ("quarter moon") punch, two different rectangular punches and a circular punch. The far right holes are for the barrel hook and they show a chip still attached by the shortest side. There is also a cut made by the blades on the upper right corner to make sure the blades cut clean and they do not slip.

The picture on the left shows a detail of the punches. Four for the flat anvil (underneath the "bridge" for seating the regulating screw) to punch through the mainspring and the one on the tip over the curved anvil to create a hook on the mainspring barrel.

MODELS

A great variety of models for these tools were produced and still many remain today. Due to limitations in the number of pictures available to be posted in eBay Guides, we are listing below some common and few uncommon models that can still show up in the marketplace and collections. The golden piece of tin sheet shown in some of the pictures is a "performance test" to provide an indication of how effectively the punches work.

Model with with barrel hook punch and mainspring punches.

Model with graduated mainspring punches. One round and three rectangular.

Single punch for mainspring and barrel hook model.

This model has mainspring punches, barrel hook punch and cutter; an all in one model with handle spring and clasp. This is an old Swiss Made top of the line model with mainspring punches of half circle, round and rectangular shapes.

Bracelet mainspring barrel hook punch. This punch has been manufactured by Hammel and Riglander Co. (HR) with English steel and rotating "turret". The turret has different punches that can be locked in position.

CHALLENGES

Some of the old tools currently available have been carefully maintained and used. In spite of their many years of service, some would still be able to perform reasonably well over even a longer period of time. However most may show some signs of wear, neglect or breakage. The following pictures show some of the most common challenges found in this type of tools:
Rust may not be always evident in these tools as some were heavily nickelled and very rarely the punches are loosened to remove the rust that's out of sight. It is a concern nevertheless, since some of the punches may need resharpening and a rusted punch might prove a significant challenge to loosen up. As the picture above indicates, some punches may not be straight, some may have broken tips or need sharpening.

Punches were generally not tempered uniformly. In some models, they were tempered in a longitudinal gradient so that the hardest portion is at the tip and gradually it becomes less hard towards the top. A bent punch might not be correctly aligned with the hole in the anvil and therefore it may not cut or if it cuts, it may deform the corresponding hole by wearing it unevenly. A bent punch might be corrected by carefully adjusting it. However, striking it with a hammer may break it. The following steps generally answer well to fix this problem:

a) Take the punch out of the pliers (penetrating oil and lightly tapping with a brass hammer might help)

b) Anneal it (and test hardness afterwards to make sure the annealing is complete)

c) Straighten it and test it in the pliers until proper alignment with the corresponding hole in the anvil is achieved

d) Re-sharpen the tip (if necessary)

e) Adjust the locking hole (if necessary) and test with the locking screw

f) Properly temper it (tip in first in cold oil moving it down gently to achieve a gradient temper)

g) Replace it in the pliers and firmly lock it in

h) Make a test with a piece of tin sheet to check proper alignment

Punches treated in this way will keep a keen edge for a long time and they will only require an occasional touch with a hard Arkansas oil stone to keep them sharp.

Some punches may be replacements of a lesser steel quality or not properly tempered to punch a hole on steel. Punches of different lengths are not a concern in itself, as long as the tip still has the proper temper grade and it is sharp.
This anvil shows the portion used by the barrel hook punch broken off and some of the other holes deformed and rusted. A broken, cracked or deformed anvil is a common problem that's very hard to solve practically. Another common challenge is that of poor maintenance: if you find an anvil broken that may be the tell tale of other problems as the tool might also have an issue on another part.

How to install a new breadmaker pan shaft seal

How to install a new breadmaker pan shaft seal.

First you must remove the pan shaft and the old seal.

1) Remove the snap ring from the bottom of the shaft. Set aside the snap ring, coupler/impeller, and fiber/metal washer.

2) Gently tap the shaft from bottom side through top side using a rubber mallet. If needed use a small dowel rod & the mallet to tap the shaft all the way through.

Now you're ready to strip & clean the drive shaft, then move on to installation.

1) Strip the shaft bare.

2) Clean the shaft with WD-40 or Hand Sanitizer Gel and a microfiber towel. If the shaft is very gummed up you may use 0000 steel wool.

Now you're ready to install the parts.

1) On the top end of the shaft place the e-clip onto the recessed cut out around the diameter of the shaft. (Make sure the clip is snapped in place securely.)

2) Slide a fiber washer onto the shaft from the bottom end up to the e-clip.

3) Place the bottom end of the shaft through the pan from top side. (Be sure to hold the washer in place so that it does not fall off.)

4) Once the shaft is in place turn the pan onto its side. Then place a fiber washer onto the shaft. Make sure its snug against the bottom of the pan.

5) Now place the coupler/impeller onto the shaft with the wings facing toward the pan.

6) Now place the snap ring onto the bottom of the shaft. You will see the recessed cut out around the diameter of the shaft just below the impeller that you just placed. Place the snap ring onto the recess and then snap it on securely.

Now you're ready to lubricate using liquid graphite Lock-Ease. Turn your pan upright and follow the directions below.

1) Apply the liquid graphite to the shaft from top side nearest the recess in the pan. The liquid graphite will flow down the shaft into the bearing.

2) Now turn the shaft back and forth sevral times while counting to ten.

Now it's time to install the new seal.

1) Holding the seal face up slip the seal onto the shaft. Slide the seal down the shaft until you reach the recess in the pan.

2) Now use your fingers to firmly press the seal into the recess until it is flush with the bottom inside of the pan. If there is too much resistance you may need to use a lubricant to help with the seating of the seal. Use only Hand Sanitizer Gel as a seating lubricant. If you need additional leverage to seat the seal you may use a deepwell socket that has a diameter slightly smaller than the seal. Be sure to place a long extension on the socket. Place the socket onto the seal and then firmly press and wobble the socket in a circular motion until the seal has seated flush with inside bottom of the pan.

3) Turn the shaft back and forth a few more times.

4) Allow the lubricant to dry before using the pan to bake bread. Allow at least 3 hours to pass before use. (I recommend 24 hours to be completely safe.)

Your finished !

Hindu Goddess Kali Stone Statue

Durga is an incarnation of Devi or the Mother Goddess, a unified symbol of all divine forces. For Shaiv as Durga is the wife of Shiva. For Vaishnavas and Shaktas Durga is another form of Uma or Parvati.
The Hindu Goddess Durga manifested when evil forces threathened the very existance of the Gods. To destroy these demons, all gods offered their radiance to her creation and each formed part of Durga's body. Durga also obtained very powerful weapons, such as the chakra from Vishnu and a trident from Shiva.
The syllable is synonymous with the 4 devils of poverty, sufferings, famine and evil habits. The refers to diseases and the is the destroyer of sins, injustice, irreligion, cruelty and laziness.Durga killed the powerful demon Mahish and all his great commanders. Demonic forces are self-destructive but very powerful. Divine forces are constructive but slow and efficient. When demonic forces create imbalance, all gods unite, becoming one divine force called Shakti or Durga.
Durga is the most splendid manifestation of Devi. Virginal and sublime, contain within her the power of all the gods combined, she is the invincible power of Nature who triumphs over those who seek to subjugate her. In this sculpture she is shown with 8 arms holding a variety of weapons, sitting atop her vahana or vehicle a lion. She is benign in this form with her hand held up in the abhaya mudra or "fear not" hand position.

Ryukyu 1970 DANCERS SET 5 STAMPS Catalog 195 - 199 MNH

I started collecting coins back in 1962 when as a proud eight year old, I had just finished showing my Grandfather my stamp collection and was told Steve it's (he was a retired Post Master), however you should collect coins. Well that did it, I went into my room and smashed my piggy bank.
After sometime I came back out with my Brand New Coin Collection, The oldest penny was a 1926 , a few Standing Liberty Quarters & Half Dollars. I can still see those quarters and how funny they where as they had no dates. Two coins that I had a few hundred of where Newfoundland coins that my dad pulled from change when we where stationed there (My Dad was in the U.S. Air Force) at Harmens Field , not far from Corners Brook & Stephensvill.
Over the years I never stopped collecting & dealing in Coins & Stamps and during the Vietnam War we where stationed at Naha Okinawa, started both my collecting and studying of Ryukyu Island Stamps. I still remember often taking the Army bus line downtown to the corner where AFNRTVR ( The American Radio station), getting off the bus and walking about a mile to visit the Naha Main Post Office of the GRI. On the corner across from the Post office was an Okinawan Stamp & Coin Dealer that I would always go into , sometimes to buy, most of the time just to look, Money was always in short supply during the summers I wold work for the Air Force @ Fifty cents an hour & even had to pay tax on it. Well it was November 1967 and New Years Card UX33 had just been issued and it was g news in that Coin & Stamp shop and looked at the one he had and the error UX33a Gold color omitted. Well I bought hundreds of the cards at the Post Office every time I went downtown and never did find one until just two weeks ago here on Ebay in a lot of Joe Bush "So called Un-Offical" Mihons, it turned out to have the very rare UX33a and making it an Ultra Rare card.

Brand New GENIE BRA~XL/1X~BLACK~FAST & FREE Shipping

Believe me...I've learned the hard way....it's best to offer free shipping to your buyers if at all possible.

First of all, we sellers open ourselves up to the possibility of getting nailed with a low DSR rating or negative/neutral feedback if we happen to upset our buyers with what they consider an excessive shipping or handling charge. No matter how much we try to explain the cost of shipping materials, our time, gas, etc... it will make no difference to the buyer who is looking for an exceptional bargain. WE know what it costs us to ship an item, but most buyers do not...and they really don't care. In this economy every penny counts, so buyers will look for the item that ships free before checking out any other one that is being offered. In the past there have been sellers who have tried to make a large profit on shipping charges, which infuriated not only buyers and other sellers, but eBay as well. Unfortunately this unscrupulous activity has made it difficult for the rest of us who were only charging our buyers a fair and honest shipping charge.

Secondly, eBay encourages us to offer free shipping...BIG time! In fact, during the holiday season eBay even offered an additional discount on our fees if we offered to ship our treasures for free. In addition, items that ship free are more visible in the "Best Match" search...so these items are much easier for the buyer to find when doing a search....this is not a small thing!

Thirdly, (and the most expensive, and what I consider the most important reason) we now have to pay Final Value Fees on the total price of the items we sell, INCLUDING the shipping charges. I realize that most sellers think this policy is completely unfair, but it is what it is...and we simply have no choice but to pay it.

I made the decision to offer free shipping when the above policy was put in place...I choose not to pay a Final Value Fee on shipping charges...period. ( Of course I've had to increase the cost of most of my items to help pay my shipping expenses. I realize this takes some time and work to change our listings, but I have found that in the long run it is worth the effort. ) I believe that eBay instituted this seemingly unfair policy to force sellers to finally realize it is in our best interest... and most importantly, to stop the dishonest shipping cost gougers/sellers that I previously mentioned!

I rarely use the auction format, as I sell my treasures out of my eBay Store...I mostly use the "Buy It Now" format with a "Best Offer" option. I do have some special items that cannot be shipped free because they are very heavy, need expensive additional insurance, or are difficult to pack. But I would say that 98% to 99% of my inventory is shipped free of charge.

Auction sales may be a little more difficult, if starting them at a very low price and still managing to ship free of charge. Once in a while, when eBay offers us free auction listings, I list a few things to simply draw more people into my store. I simply establish a decent/fair starting price that is a bit lower than the price of the item in my store.

I have found that free shipping is a BIG plus for most buyers, as quite a few have let me know how much it is appreciated.... and it has most certainly made an enormous difference in my feedback and my DSR rating.
