IS THE THREAD COUNT LISTED WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY GETTING? LEARN ABOUT FALSE & INFLATED THREAD COUNTS FOR BEDDING, FINE BED LINENS, SHEETS SETS AND DUVET COMFORTER COVERS
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has spoken out August 2005, to battle a major issue that has been impacting both consumers and manufacturers, in regard to what are deemed falsified, 'fake' or inflated Thread Counts used particularly in the sector of Bedding. The issue has become increasingly worse over the past several years: how do manufacturers need to disclose fabric "Thread Count" for their products including Sheets, Duvet Sets and Bedding. In simple terms, Thread Count is defined as the number of threads, fibers or yarns per square inch in an article of clothing, Bedding or fabric piece. Of crucial importance and debate has been the how manufacturers have been advertising their products fin the household textile product category inclusive of Bedding such as Bed Sheets, Duvet Covers, Coverlets and similar Bedding Sets. There has been accusations and debate that consumers are being misled, resulting in numerous articles and exposure of the topic on news stations across the country as the topic has become more and more heated.

WHAT IS THE FTC'S STATEMENT? According to the FTC, individual threads should be counted as one thread, regardless of whether they are single-ply or multi-ply. A multi-ply, or multiple-ply thread is one that has been created by twisting two or more single-ply threads together. Learn more about multiple-ply thread sets below.
In what has become an increasingly confusing, and potentially misleading, the FTC has spoken out to clarify its position in a letter to the National Textile Association, (NTA) whose Textile Bedding Committee had asked for guidance on the proper way to label products. The opinion and statement from the FTC is that 'some suppliers label their bedding products with inflated "thread counts" by counting each individual ply' when they are in fact using multiple-ply techniques. In the staff opinion, the FTC has stated that this action could be deceptive and misleading to consumers because many consumers associate higher "thread count" with high-quality, luxury products.

If the producer or retailer wants to identify a product as being made from plied yarns, the FTC indicated that the product label and advertising should state, for example, "300 thread count, made using two-ply yarns." and that "to label such a product as "600 thread count" would be deceptive." In efforts to meet consumer demand for higher Thread Counts, which is what most consumers have been led to believe is the best factor in determining quality of sheet sets, many manufacturers have rushed to list Thread Counts of '1000TC' and even above, when the actual Thread Count determination is technically 250TC to 500TC depending upon the number of ply used in weaving of the bedding.
Spilhaus, president of the NTA, issued the following statement in regard to this heated topic: "Thread count is the way many shoppers compare bedding products before purchase. This clarification by the FTC will help ensure consumers can shop with confidence when products are labeled and marketed properly." The FTC additionally cited the ASTM method of determining thread count as well as the traditional way the U.S. textile bedding industry determines thread count in reaching its opinion.

WHAT SHOULD CONSUMERS LOOK FOR ON THE PACKAGE OR DESCRIPTION WHEN PURCHASING A NEW SHEET SET?
Multiple-ply Sheets and other Bedding, such as Duvets, Duvet Covers and Sets, Coverlets, etc are now listing the number of ply used in the set particularly for Sheet Sets. The best Sheets and Sheet Sets are comprised of Single-Ply threads despite some manufacturer's efforts to lead consumers to believe otherwise. Single-Ply Threads are uncompromised and whole, and do not break down or roughen as easily. Be sure to check the text of the company or seller, and to inquire if you are unable to find the information. Egyptian Cotton, Pima Cotton and other Cottons used in Sheets or lightweight Cotton Duvets made of similar Sheeting material will always have a ply listed if the set is Multiple-Ply, and it is the consumer's responsibility to check this play before purchase. Many companies or sellers will not advertise that their sets are in fact 2-ply or 4-ply, instead of the supreme single-ply, because they are aware that consumers are becoming more savvy in checking ply before purchase. If you do not see any ply referenced in the item description, beware, and check with the company to find out what ply is used. If the company makes any statement to the effect that its Sheets do not have a ply involved, this is untrue-all Sheet Sets have a ply and, while Single-Ply Sets are not required to be specified on the exterior label, Multiple-Ply sets are required to specify this on the exterior packaging. For these type of products that are multiple-ply, the exterior label will read similar to the following: 'this set was created using multiple-ply threads' or the words '2-ply' or '4-ply' on the exterior packaging or label. It is important that consumers read the exterior packaging or online text carefully, or ask the seller if the description does not specify what ply is actually used because manufacturers are not required to include this information on interior labels themselves.
