Killi fish have become very popular especially now they can be purchased on ebay. but this Guide is for new comers to the hobby who wish to reduce the pitfalls.

Try to pick easy to hatch and grow types if you are starting out, there is nothing more demoralizing than purchasing some of these lovely coloured fish eggs, only to find hatching and growing them to full adulthood is well beyond your capabilities. Eggs are sent in several ways, but most will arrive in a padded envelope containing a zip poly bag with peat in it, this is the most popular way of sending customers eggs, it helps to prevent flattening of the contents and thereby damaging the eggs. the other popular way is to send them on damp mops once again in poly zip bags. which ever method is used to send your eggs one rule should always be observed. handle the eggs as little as possible, if at all. I have found the best way to empty the poly bag of it's contents is to fill it with aged tank water and then invert it to empty the whole consignment into a white dish, top up the dish with water until it is about one inch high, this will very in amounts subject to the size of dish you use, but ice cream containers are splendid for this operation.

There is one point that i would like to make that has started to become a problem these past few months, sellers sending eggs in peat that do not contain the number advertised on the listing. it is advised that if you do find this to be a fact you must get in touch with the seller to ask why they have not sent the right amount. If he has made an honest mistake he will offer to send you further supply of eggs, although this is acceptable it will mean that you end up with two lots of eggs at different ages. depending on the days difference between laying, you may find you will have to run two tanks to grow these fish instead of the one tank had all the eggs been sent in the first place.

If your seller suggests he refunds you, then this would have to be reported. It is likely he is working the numbers game. Let me explain. say i have two pairs of killi fish laying eggs, i would estimate the number of eggs I could sell would be about 50 to 60 per week, assuming the usual fertile rate, (all eggs layed are not fertile) now if I offer them in bids of 12 eggs that would be 5 lots. now if i only put 9 or 10 eggs in each lot i now have enough eggs for 10 lots. all i want now is for the majority of customers not to know how to seperate the eggs from the peat, the ones that do find out i'll offer to refund them, that stops them from complaining, but the majority will not know so i'm quids in. be warned, it is going on and needs to be stopped.
